The Liberation War of Bangladesh happened in 1971. It was very important for Bangladesh because it brought its independence and thus changed its political, economic and cultural condition to a great extent. The background of the war was the oppression of the West Pakistani imposed on the people of East Pakistan. After the division of the Indian Subcontinent in 1947. we came under Pakistani rule. The Pakistani rulers were exploiting us extremely, We were crippled economically, physically and mentally by them. As a result, we got united and carried on movement against them under the leadership of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Bangabandhu won at the election of the National Assembly of Pakistan in 1970. He acquired the right to form the Government of Pakistan with his absolute majority in the Parliament. But under cover of negotiation with the Awami League leaders President Yahia Khan hatched a conspiracy. On the midnight of March 25, 1971 the Pakistani army attacked the sleeping, armless innocent Bengalis. They attacked the Police Force, the EPR and Bengal Regiment. The heroic sons of Bangladesh also counter attacked the occupation forces. People from all walks of life joined the war and fought heroically for about nine months. Eventually, the occupation forces were bound to surrender to our Mukti Bahini and thus we achieved our independence.
