সাঙ্গু নদীর ইতিবৃত্তি/ Details of Sangu Nadi

শঙ্খ নদী বা সাঙ্গু নদী, বাংলাদেশের পূর্ব-পাহাড়ি অঞ্চলের বান্দরবান ও চট্টগ্রাম জেলার একটি নদী। সাঙ্গু নদীর দৈর্ঘ্য ২৯৪ কিলোমিটার এবং গড় প্রস্থ ১১৯ মিটার। ১৮৬০ সালে পার্বত্য চট্টগ্রাম ও চট্টগ্রামের গেজেটটি প্রকাশকালে ব্রিটিশরা ইংরেজিতে এ নদীকে সাঙ্গু নাম দেন, যা মারমা সম্প্রদায়ের মানুষের ভাষায় এটিকে শঙ্খ বা রিগ্রাই থিয়াং (স্বচ্ছ পানির নদ) বলা হয়। বান্দরবানের সাঙ্গু নদীর লোকজনের নব্বই শতাংশই মারমা। জীবন ও জীবিকাসহ দৈনন্দিন কাজে বান্দবানের মানুষ এ নদীর ওপর নির্ভরশীল।

Sankh Nadi or Sangu Nadi is a river in Bandarban and Chittagong districts in the eastern hilly region of Bangladesh. The Sangu river has a length of 294 km and an average width of 119 m. In 1860, when the Gazetteer of Chittagong Hill Tracts and Chittagong was published, the British named the river in English as Sangu, which in the language of the Marma community is called Shankh or Rigrai Thiang (river of clear water). Ninety percent of the people of Bandarban's Sangu Nadi are Marmas. The people of Bandaban depend on this river for their daily life and livelihood.

যদিও সাঙ্গু নদী দেশের দক্ষিণ পার্বত্য চট্টগ্রাম অঞ্চলে অবস্থিত, একটি পাহাড়ি নদী। কিন্তু কর্ণফুলীর পর এটি চট্টগ্রাম বিভাগের দ্বিতীয় বৃহত্তম নদী। বাংলাদেশের অভ্যন্তরে যতগুলো নদীর উৎপত্তি রয়েছে, তাদের মধ্যে সাঙ্গু নদী অন্যতম। মিয়ানমার বা বার্মার সীমান্তবর্তী বাংলাদেশের পার্বত্য চট্টগ্রামের বান্দরবান জেলার মদক এলাকার পাহাড়ে এ নদীর জন্ম। বান্দরবান জেলা ও দক্ষিণ চট্টগ্রামের চন্দনাইশ, আনোয়ারা, সাতকানিয়া এবং বাঁশখালীর ওপর দিয়ে প্রবাহিত হয়ে এ নদী বঙ্গোপসাগরে গিয়ে মিশেছে। উৎসমুখ থেকে বঙ্গোপসাগর পর্যন্ত এই নদীর দৈর্ঘ্য ১৭০ কিলোমিটার।

Although the Sangu Nadi is located in the southern Chittagong Hill Tracts of the country, it is a mountain river. But it is the second largest river in Chittagong division after Karnaphuli. The Sangu Nadi is one of the rivers that have their origin in the interior of Bangladesh. This river originates in the mountains of Madak area of ​​Bandarban district of Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh bordering Myanmar or Burma. The river flows through Chandanish, Anwara, Satkania and Banshkhali in Bandarban district and South Chittagong and merges into the Bay of Bengal. The length of this river from the source to the Bay of Bengal is 170 km.

সাঙ্গু নদী বা শঙ্খ নদী বান্দরবান জেলার প্রধানতম নদী। পার্বত্য চট্টগ্রামের বান্দরবান জেলা শহরও এ সাঙ্গু নদীর তীরে অবস্থিত। বান্দরবান জেলার জীবন ও জীবিকার সাথে সাঙ্গু নদী ওতপ্রোতভাবে জড়িত। এখানকার পাহাড়ি জনপদের যোগাযোগের ক্ষেত্রে এ নদী একটি অন্যতম মাধ্যম।
