Bangladesh is going to launch its second satellite “Bangabandhu Satellite-2” by December 2023. With launching ‘Bangabandhu Satellite-1’ into space in 12 May 2018, Bangladesh became the 57th member of the elite club of satellites. The project of Bangabandhu Satellite-1 costs Tk 2,765 crore. The satellite is located 36,000 kilometers away from earth. It provides services to Bangladesh and many other South Asian countries. By launching Bangabandhu Setellite-2, Bangladesh will become self-reliant in earth observation with optical and radar images and applications. Bangladeshi security and law enforcing agencies need security images which are not commercially available. Bangabandhu Satellite-2 will make that process easy. The Bangabandhu Satellite-2 won’t be launched only for commercial purpose. It will cover on the country’s remote areas including char and coastal sites as well. With the aim of launching Bangabandhu Satellite-2, Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited (BSCL) signed a cooperation contract with the Russian company Glavkosmos on 2 February 2022. The contract termed as Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), both the parties will work on detailed technical and financial issues. The MoU comes into effect from the moment of signing and will be valid until 31 December 2026.
